Spring has sprung
We’re welcoming spring a little differently this year. This year, we got to experience the Indian celebration of Holi. Holi is a celebration of the ending of Winter and the start of Spring. Holi usually takes place in March on the last full moon day of the Hindu lunisolar calendar month. Although the origin of Holi is rooted in Indian culture and beliefs, it’s become known as a celebration of spring, friendship, and joy. This was our first Holi and it was such a great experience!
There were people from all walks of life at the celebration from various backgrounds. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly, often greeting you with some colored powder on your cheek and saying “Happy Holi”. Kids would walk up to one another and gently rub a streak of color on your head or shirt with grins from ear to ear. It was also a great opportunity for the kids to learn about another culture and some traditions of that culture. Even though we don’t ascribe to the same beliefs, it’s important for them to understand people from different faiths, have a unique perspective on the world and accept others’ unique values. These are the things we want to see more of in the world.
We will definitely want to attend this Holi event again next year. It was great meeting new people, feeling a part of the community, getting to listen to some Bollywood music, and dancing in the style of Bhangra with a large group of people. We, as a family, already have a deep appreciating for Indian culture and enjoy learning more about it. We hope to have more opportunities to explore other cultures as well. Happy Holi to you all!
